Shop Captains

Lowell Makes is a collection of several distinct work areas called “shops.”  Each shop can have its own rules or safety check-out processes, and has at least one and sometimes several “Captains.”  These captains are your primary contact for questions about how to make use of the shop, schedule check-outs, or report malfunctioning equipment. The Shop Captains are volunteer members who hold important positions at Lowell Makes. They are responsible for the management and operation of their individua shops. Shop Captains have many duties but they also get to make decisions on behalf of their shops. They are responsible for making rules, overseeing operations, planning and hosting Checkouts, and making purchases on behalf of their shops. Any member can put their name in to be a Captain, but only the most dedicated and responsible get the chance to run a Lowell Makes shop.

What do Shop Captains do?

The Shop Captains are governed by the set of Bylaws linked below, but for most members, Shop Captains are a resource and an introduction to the shops and workspaces at Lowell Makes.

Each shop is it's own "Kingdom" but each shop only survives if the whole of Lowell Makes survives. Shop Captains are the faces that the members meet and know. They promote Lowell Makes as a whole and support each other and each other's shops as well as the membership.

If you have questions, the shop’s Captain is a great place to start. Captain’s know more about their shops than just about anyone! But remember, please be patient and kind, Shop Captains are volunteers and members, just like you!
